Day 14:

Today we decided to explore Humboldt County a bit, and on Jabin's recommendation took a trip to Fern Gully. I mean, Fern Canyon.

I've been craving NY pizza since being turned onto this blog by my buddy Dan Santoro. Needless to say, the slice from "Live From New York Pizza" next to the hotel didn't satisfy.

Day 13:

We got up before the street cleaners, loaded up the Camry, said Goodbye to Mark and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge shrouded in fog.

Trapped in traffic.

I'm driving through a tree! I'm driving THROUGH a TREE!!

I can almost touch the top.

Along the way we took the Avenue of the Giants to see lots of huuuuge redwoods, and even drove through one. We arrived at the Hotal Arcata, a national historic landmark, checked in and had some amazing tacos from the Que Grande taco truck. They reminded me of my favorite place in Portland, Porque No.

God, yes.

After that we sat in the plaza and watched a small group practicing Capoeira. For dinner we ate sushi at the hotel restaurant.

Day 12:

Another fantastic breakfast! This time the Samurai Omelette at Eats down the street from Mark's place.

We were lucky enough to end up in San Francisco during some warm weather, so after digesting we headed to Baker Beach with Mark and Ted. The water was icy, but I figured if I didn't get in, I'd regret it. So, I took a quick dip and quickly ran back up the beach.

Day 11:

Saturday we woke up and decided to take a walk to Japan town, and stopped at Tartine Bakery for some breakfast. Japan town is nothing special, really. But we're both fans of Japanese "stuff." Liz wanted to pick up some pens for our host, Danielle, and I was curious about a brand of rubber eraser I recently read about.

Hills are hard on hips.

We headed back from the direction we came to get lunch with Liz's brother, Danny, who recently moved to SF, and his girlfriend Lily. I had the Green Benedict at the Pork Store Cafe: Eggs benedict with asparagus and avocado, and I believe it said something like "asparagus hollandaise." It was fantastic and rivals the Tamale Scramble.

From there we met up with Danielle and Will again at Bi-Rite Creamery for some ice cream. Not being a big ice-cream guy, I just tasted what Liz got: Sam's Sundae, chocolate ice cream with whipped cream, bergamot olive oil and sea salt. Incredible. Best ice cream snack I ever had. Could have used some shortbread or something on the side.

We headed back to Danielle and Will's place to pack everything back in the car and drive across town to visit Mark, and old friend of Liz's. We hung out at Mark's for a while, then decided to get a beer before dinner at B-Star, a Burmese restaurant. My pulled pork sandwich took the last bit of energy I had, and I passed out on Mark's couch within the first five minutes of The Science of Sleep. It seemed like a funny movie.

Day 10:

Another day of driving.
We stopped at Yosemite Forks Mountain House for breakfast. The Tamale Scramble was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.

We hit the road and enjoyed a slow meandering drive through beautiful Yosemite National Park.

Driving into San Francisco was ugly and harrowing, but the other direction was barely moving. We had a rough time parking, but met up with Danielle and Will and had a real nice italian dinner. Back to their place to relax for a bit, and then sleep.

If it costs $6 to park, it's probably not a real ghost town.

Day 9:

We left Vegas after going back and forth on the highway twice. Sometimes the GPS can be a pain to deal with.

Another day of driving. We're really looking forward to spending some time in San Francisco this weekend.

Hey, that's my cousin's name.

We're staying just outside of Yosemite National Park tonight. On our way, we stopped at Calico Ghost Town, which is not anywhere near as interesting as it might sound. I believe at one point Calico was a mining town, and eventually the money dried up and everybody left and it became a ghost town. Now it's been refurbished into a tiny theme park with the least amount of work possible. It's more of an old west themed trucker stop. Too bad. It was surprisingly busy with charter groups of foreigners.

They love it.

Driving through the Rockies is unbelievable. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We're staying with Henry and Dodie tonight in Grand Junction, Colorado. Henry is the brother of Liz's uncle, Van. They fed a delicious dinner and helped us plan the next leg of our journey. Thanks guys.

Nothin' Lasts Forever But The Earth & Sky

Day 6:

Kansas.

After a night in Lawrence, Kansas - a typical college town - we drove all day to Denver. An otherwise monotonous day of driving through the midwest was salvaged by a small roadside attraction that I forget the exact name to. Something along the lines of "See the Prairie Dogs!! Coyotes! Peacocks! Pigs! etc, etc."

Incredible.

I know what you're thinking, and the answer is "Yes, that is the biggest prairie dog in the world."

Some might point out the probably less-than-ideal housing conditions of the animals, and I couldn't disagree. But I got to see some animals up close that don't seem to make it into the zoo. A couple of Coyotes, one of my all-time favorite animals. They've moved back to D.C. by the way, read about it. And some foxes. If I could have a pet fox, I would. Also, some fantastic taxidermy.

And the truth of it is that Kansas isn't so bad. It's beautiful, and I've learned that I'm obsessed with clouds.

Day 5:

The smartest of all monkeys takes a break to consider his options.

Sunday before we left St. Louis, we headed to the St. Louis Zoo. Apparently rated as the best free zoo in the country, which as far as I'm concerned makes it THE BEST zoo in the country. Every time I go, there are at least a few animals putting on a show. Unfortunately, the usual star, the Malayan Sunbear, was chillaxing in his tree, but the humping Tortoises and Tigers more than made up for it.

The Sunbear waves and leaves the heavy lifting to the Tortoises and Tigers.

Awesomeness.

Really?

From the zoo we headed to La Casa Pasadita (confirm the name for me, Lee), an amazing Mexican restaurant in an old Taco Bell building. Their Al Pastor Torta is one of the best I've ever had.

After saying goodbye to everyone we hopped back in the car and hit the road heading for Lawrence, Kansas.

Thank you, St. Louis, you've always been great to me!

Day 4:

Liz chillin' at the yard sale.

Saturday morning Lee's brother Cole was having a yard sale and a bunch of us set up camp to watch the sales. After several hours of easy living we went to get some lunch, then Lee, Liz and I went to see Inglourious Basterds. That movie rules. I can't wait to see it again.

Lee, Bri-Zone and I managed to motivate ourselves enough to meet up at a party with Peat Henry, an all-around great guy and partier. Despite our best efforts the word "party" seems a bit of a stretch, but we did manage to invent both "Machine gun" drinks, and the "Thigh Five". So it wasn't a total loss. And when the drinks were gone, we hopped back on our bikes and made our way home.

Lee and I got stuck scrolling through quite a bit of Mister Jalopy's blog "Hooptyrides," reminiscing old posts and explaining to each other the intricacies of why we feel the way we do about Mr. J. Eventually, we found our ways to sleep.

Day 3:

Lee.

Jabin and Hannah are both teachers and were off to work before Liz and I got up. We left a note thanking them for their hospitality and Bud Light Limes (!).

We arrived at Christine's apartment in St. Louis around 4 or 5pm. I've known Lee and Christine for about 10 years now, and they are two of my favorite people. My visits to St. Louis are always packed with adventure and this one was no different. Two long nights of riding bikes around looking for parties. I have to say, this was the first time there didn't seem to be a slew of crazy parties, but I had a great time cruising the streets with a handful of friends.

Day 2:
We got up early, had some breakfast with Stevan and Jordana, and got back out on the road, headed for North Manchester, Indiana to stay with my buddy Jeremy's brother Jabin and his wife Hannah. They took us on a walking tour of their small town, and it's no exaggeration to say that Jabin knows every single person in the town.

Walkin'.

We met "50 Pieces" a local character with prosthetic arms and legs who drives around town in a golf cart. We checked out the three bars in town which comprise the "Barmuda Triangle." We dropped in on the new renter of the apartment Jabin lived in for 13 yrs. And Jabin showed off the Firehouse, and old firehouse that was turned into a music venue by some young men several years ago which Jabin helps to run. The Firehouse is fully supported by financial donations and volunteer work from around town.

Brooklyn Bridge on our way out.

We're gone. Brooklyn was fun, but now we're on our way to Portland, Oregon.
Thanks to everyone for all the good times.
We're going to try to keep you updated on our journey across the country with this blog. I'm not sure how often we'll be able to update it, but we're giving it a shot.

Day 1:
We left on 9/9/09. After the GPS dragged us around in circles in NJ for an hour, our first planned stop was Centralia, PA, an old mining town. In 1962 the coal mine caught on fire and is still burning to this day (more about Centralia). I first heard about Centralia in Bill Bryson's book, A Walk In The Woods, and I've been wanting to visit and take photos since. Unfortunately, in the whirlwind of packing for the move, I never printed out the maps and information to help us find the more interesting spots in Centralia, and the iphone wasn't getting any service. So a grate with smoke wafting out was all we really saw of any interest. After driving around the old crumbling streets we gave up and got back on the road. Maybe some day I'll get back there with the real info and get satisfaction. From Centralia we headed to Pittsburgh and stayed with our friends Jordana and Stevan and their adorable 8-month old, Sydney. They fed us a delicious home-cooked meal and gave us a comfortable bed to sleep on.

Often in life, success is an amorphous, individual feeling that is hard to measure in any real concrete terms. The beauty of fishing is that success is measured in weight. I caught 2 brown lake trout, 4 lbs and 3 lbs. Not too bad. Josh and Jerry both caught 4 pounders and Craig was the real success story with his big, bloodied 8 pounder.

I've eaten a couple fillets from my fish, it looks and tastes a lot like Salmon.

The biggest lesson I've learned is that fishing is a lot more fun when you are doing it right.

It doesn't seem possible that it's been eight years. It barely seems like 2 years ago that I met Karl as we both moved into our freshman dorm room at NYU. It was clear from the first morning there that we would get along, as I woke up in time to watch Mike Pace looming over Karl and asking if it would be possible to switch rooms. Karl gave him the brush-off, and as Mike turned to look to me as a second and final chance, I was already shaking my head "no" from under my sheets. Now Karl has left New York and headed across the country, and I can't blame. But I do miss him.

So my little brother got married. I was the Best Man ("If I'm the best man, why is she marrying him?"). I knocked em dead with my speech. I danced. I ate. I drank. It was a great time, and I'm incredibly happy for both of them. Well done.

A couple weeks ago Kyle and I went fishing in Prospect Park. We had no idea what we were doing, and apparently were using fly-fishing lures and just casting and reeling em back in. I'm sure it wasn't the only thing we were doing wrong. But if it catches a fish, how wrong could it be? Actually, I didn't catch the fish, but I did hook a small bass. When it jumped a foot out of the water twice and got off the hook, I realized I had never caught a sport fish before. Just a bunch of sunnies, a snapping turtle, and one time even managed to have a mussel clamp down on my hook. If I haven't made it clear, the day was beyond successful and we're fishing again this weekend, and planning a trip to Mulder's Preserve in Jamestown, NJ.

It took a while to find a place that actually sells New York State fishing licenses, but Triangle Sports on Flatbush ave was a quick bike ride away, and $19 later I'm licensed to fish in New York State and certain border waters until the end of September.

I showed this painting in the annual Upstarts tattoo art show at Saved Gallery in Williamsburg last night. Liz and I went out to the opening party. It went really well, got to meet a handful of new people and re-meet some others I haven't seen in a while. My painting got a really good response, and I couldn't be happier with who it's going home with. Couldn't be happier that is, until I get the piece he is painting for me in return.

It really couldn't have gone any better.

The show will be up til about mid-June, and there is a lot of great work from some great tattooers.

Brooklyn Bikeshop Blues

My power adapter for my computer died. Until I get a new one that means my computer is dead too, and that means I can't upload pictures, which means I can't put the pictures on here. Once I get that all going I'll post some pictures for these pictureless posts.

I'm really disappointed with the local bikeshops in my area. Actually, I love the one right around the corner from me, but they don't sell tools. So, I checked out two other shops, and I was hoping to find some employees that might like to impart some knowledge about bikes and help point me in the right direction. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by Lee, Cole and Colin, but it didn't go well. When I asked at the first shop if there was something to measure the headset locknut so I could get the right wrench, the crooked toothed bitch mocked me and told me she'd be a rich woman if she could invent such a thing. I'm pretty sure a set of calipers is such a thing. but I could be wrong. So, that was a bummer, but I knew there was another shop, RA Cycles that sounded promising. They definitely had a lot of stuff there, but after trying unsuccessfully to make eye contact with any of the several employees walking around the shop, one guy stopped long enough to let me know they didn't have the size headset wrench I needed. Fuck them too.

On my way home I stopped by my local Mazzone True Value Hardware store and got a large adjustable wrench which worked perfect for the headset locknut. I also picked up a center punch which came in handy for knocking out the cotters from the Girl Bike cranks. I still had to drill out the bolts, which went pretty well on the first one, but less well on the second when my angle was off and drilled through the crank itself. There's still a section of the bearing housing stuck in the frame too.

I did clean and sand the fork, and put the first layer of primer on it.

The Bike Shop around the corner from me let me take this junker off their hands for free. I'll be calling it the Girl Bike Project. This is the first installment.
So far I've reduced it to a frame and a box of rusty parts:

I got stuck at the bottom bracket, the chain, and the headset. I'll need some job-specific tools to tackle these it seems. I'm gonna pick those up tommorrow.
I couldn't get the handlebar stem out, I think the expander at the bottom was rusted in there or something, so I stuck the long bolt back in there and hammered it. It got the stem out, but I think I destroyed the threads inside the expander piece. We'll see what that means later on in the project.

After I get the rest of the parts off it's gonna be cleaning time. I have a feeling when I try to clean the rusted chain it's going to disintegrate into nothing.
Speaking of rust, any recommendations for removing the rust and rust proofing things that I won't be painting, like the gears and shit. And when I say "rust" I don't mean like a little bit. Like serious rust.

Anyway, her name is Zoe Bell, she's in Tarantino's segment of Grindhouse, titled Deathproof, which is probably the best movie ever, and it's due in large part to how badass Zoe Bell is.
And if you want to, you can rent Double Dare (it's on Netflix). It's a documentary that follows Zoe Bell's move from doubling for Lucy Lawless in her native New Zealand to make it as a stuntwoman in America. It goes well.

Last Fall Lee and Colin brought a bike up from DC for Liz.
It turned out to be a little too big for her, so I adopted it.
I love my bike.
I love working on my bike.
I didn't know anything about working on bikes when I got it, but I'm determined to work on it myself. So far I've replaced a couple tubes, patched a tube, adjusted the front and rear brakes, adjusted the brake levers, retaped the handlebars, tightened spokes, trued the wheels (haven't rounded them yet), adjusted the front and rear derailleurs, and replaced the rear derailleur cable.
Next, I plan to get all the rust out of there, clean it up, and repaint it.
I love my bike.

After proving that April is a good month for flying kites, and setting the high score on Erotic Photo Hunt, we headed over to Karl's for hotdogs, beer and AFV. Later it turned into a dance party for some. There's not much to tell that the images wouldn't tell better. Oh, but the images might not mention that Karl and Kyle were awesomely drunk.

Tuesday night we had our first public performances in front of a rapt audience at Bar4:
You can almost feel the tension in the room.
Anyway, me, Karl and Jeremy each played 2 songs. Kyle, Sarah and Janeanne were nice enough to cheer us on. It was awesome, and I'm pretty sure that despite the audience, the bar employees were totally into us.

It's My Party and I'll Wear Plastic Armor and Cheer Knights if I Want To!

I was in St. Louis during my birthday, so when I got back, a group of us hopped on a bus out to Lyndhurst, NJ to go see Medieval Times for a belated celebration. It was fucking awesome. Karl, Janeanne, Jeremy, Melanie, Alicia, Scott (who came all the way from ATL! Nice.), Liz, me, Dan and Erin all made the trip. We almost filled an entire row, but not quite--much the chagrin of the young NJ couple who had to deal with the plastic-armor-fueled mayhem of me and Mr. Rosato. The highlight was the falcon flying around the room. The lowlight, apart from our own Blue Knight getting ripped off in the closing rounds, was the food. All in all, it was a full success.

It should be noted that the plastic armor was provided by Dan and Erin, and it wouldn't have been the same without it. If they were giving away awards for the people having the best time, all those little brats filling the stadium wouldn't have stood a chance.

In February I took a trip out to St. Louis to have some fun and do a couple tattoos. These are the knuckleheads I stayed with, Cole and Lee (and their parents). The Todoroviches are some of the best people around:

Open Mic! episode 1: Karl's Basement

Jeremy Karl and Kyle went over to Bar4 at 7:30 for the open mic sign ups, but apparently once you sign up, you have to stay and the first performer doesn't go on til 9. There were about four guys with guitars sitting around, so they figured we should pregame at Karl's and head over together around 8:30, which we did. Unfortunately, when we arrived the crowd had grown quite a bit and we were 26-28th on the list. At roughly 10 minutes a set, we figured we be sitting through over 4 hrs of amateur songwriting. We stayed for a couple beers, and saw some of what you'd expect, some better stuff, and the amazing duet of Bob Muir and the Enemy Below.
We decided to head back to Karl's with some tall Buds and have a private open mic in the basement. It's a bit of a blur, but Jeremy played "Britney Spears Is More Punk Than You," and another one. I played "Planting Dinosaurs" a song about a breakup with a clown, and something about how Jesus dying on the cross doesn't make any sense. Karl played a song about his Pantolones and some others (sorry for the lack of details guys). Then I finished up with an encore of Nelly's "Hot in Herre." All in all, a full success.
Next week, we know the deal and are aiming for a spot in the first 10 at Bar4. Wish us luck.

The Devil Made Me Do It

I've been working at becoming a tattoo artist for a couple years now. I was fortunate enough to fall into an apprenticeship with Joe Truck, who taught me a lot, and got me tattooing up in Yonkers, NY. Unfortunately, the city of Yonkers was not interested in our shop being open there, and after tattooing illegally there for months, Joe closed the doors and headed out to Cali. It was a big blow to my tattoo career, because I still didn't have my own equipment. So tattooing got put on hold for a bit, while I toiled away in an office, saving my pennies.

Finally, I got my machines, and pigments, and did the apartment thing. I took a trip out to LA last year to see Truck, and did a few tattoos, and picked up some lessons. Then back to my apartment with renewed vigor and increased skill. With a few more tattoos under my belt, and a portfolio padded with drawings and paintings, I walked into some tattoo shops in the West Village, famous for their low quality, high speed, and quick turnover of customers and artists. Just the place for another tattooer to get his foot in the door. I ended up at Jokers Tattoo on Bleecker, and it seemed there could be worse places I could be tattooing. This was in May, and now, the beginning of October, almost 6 months and another trip to Cali later, I'm ready to leave Jokers and work for Craig Rodriguez at Hand of Glory in Brooklyn. The people are nice, the neighborhood is comfortable, the clientele is more informed, and the quality of work is much higher.

Yesterday, I did my first Taz. It's been a long road, but I have finally made it.

San Pedro Tattoo Trip, vol. 2

Finally.

So, I spent most of my sleeping time on the floor of Iggy's apartment. It wasn't bad at all. We watched some Spongebob (awesome), Congo (shitty), and ALIENS (Iggy didn't know it was a sequel).

Anyway, in addition to taking care of me, Iggy was also charged with entertaining two wonderful girls named Kayla and April, who do porn. And by "do porn" I mean they have sex on film. Here they are putting on makeup for some reason.

So, as you may have guessed, we all got some MGD, blasted some metal off my laptop, smoked and sat in the empty, green-tiled hot tub in the corner of April's motel, surrounded by mirrors. For good measure, there was also a mirror on the ceiling over the bed. How could you not have a good time in this place?

By the way, Kayla can reference Dumb and Dumber with the best of us. Anyway, despite being extremely pleasant and fun girls, it wasn't my environ and the night went on a little long, and somehow Iggy, Jeff (Iggy's roommate) and I made it relatively safely to Denny's and I ate a shitload. It was a good night. Oh, also I tattooed a rad skull on April that morning:

I ate some tasty sushi, a lot of In-N-Out, dinners with Gabriella and Joe, did a lot of cool tattoos on some cool people, made some friends, drove the wrong way down a one-way street with Ali, and worked every day. Not bad. I had a great time, and can't wait to go back. Maybe I'll take a day off next time. Thanks.

San Pedro Tattoo Trip, vol. 1

My buddy and mentor Joe Truck invited me out to San Pedro, CA to tattoo at their new shop, All Souls Tattoo. It's not the best name for a tattoo shop, but the upside is that when you say it people think you're saying "Asshole's Tattoo" and that IS the best name for a tattoo shop.

I stayed with him most of the time. We got high and watched Spongebob and Congo and stuff like that. He's also helper at the shop and is getting into tattooing any way he can. A very good dude. I also did two of my favorite tattoos on him, here's one:

We ate a lot of In-N-Out. Here's something interesting, they write Bible scripture on their cups, but if you order the #1 meal, with everything "animal-style" it costs $6.66. It must mean something. They also give out stickers which rules. And check out the big sign:

My faux-gay lover Cam, of Charmed,Smallville, and now Ugly Betty fame, came by the shop to talk about getting tattooed by me after getting special permission from his mom. You gotta love that.
